Harry Winston – Aspiration v’s Accessibility

Marilyn Monroe was an advocate for “diamonds being a girls best friend” - however we doubt she would have rushed over to Harry Winston based on the images from the new advertising campaign.

HARRYWINSTON.COM describes the Harry Winston Legacy as “rare”, “exceptional”,”timeless,” and ”a jeweler to the stars.” When we think Harry Winston; we picture Rachel Zoe frolicking through the archives looking for pieces for one of her star clients to wear to the Oscars.

‘We have a few international jewelry houses in Australia (Tiffany, Cartier, Bvlgari)but as yet we don’t have Harry Winston. When you visit the Harry Winston website www.harrywinston.com you can see some really exceptional and breathtaking jewelry. At one stage the company owned the Hope Diamond. Reading about the brands inspirational history in the “Our Story” tab made us struggle to understand why the brand has taken this tact in its current campaign.  There appears to be a few mixed messages in the Harry Winston marketing communications, including… Read more

The Givenchy Campaign v’s a Department Store Experience.

Personally I am a huge fan of this Fall 2011 Givenchy campaign shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, as a print experience I would rate it as Perfection ★★★★‘ - Hannah Brooks

Our Anne Hathaway V’s Gwyneth Paltrow – Does TOD’s Win post raised an interesting debate. When does using a well know model or actor/actress detract from the products/brand and make us focus more on the celebrity than the product?

In this case I believe the products and the band are the main feature. Givenchy have used  high-profile models yet my eyes are definitely drawn to the desirable products. I would be curious to see how this translates in store. Perfection ★★★★‘ – Olya Bell

Our men’s fragrance debate – is Iggy the answer?

Iggy Pop as the new  face of Paco Rabanne Black XS L’Exces…and what a face it is!!!!

Just to add another layer to our men’s fragrance debate - Paco Rabanne have certainly taken a different track in marketing this scent. No buff male models or Hollywood Celebs are featured in this campaign.

What are your opinions on this decision by Paco Rabanne… Does Iggy Pop, as the face of a men’s fragrance, represent innovation or desperation?

Acqua Di Gio – Who does this appeal to? No really?

VOGUE DEC 2011 EDITION – Judge a Cover

Our Facebook page has not been short of opinions on the December issues of VOGUE from all around the world.  Some of our followers have kindly loaded some images and started their critique! Bravo!

Cultural references and preferences exist and should be celebrated, because fashion and taste should never be cookie cutter!

Anna Winter : “People constantly make the mistake of comparing London with New York, Milan and Paris and that’s not what it’s about. London has its own fashion identity. You come here to find the next Alexander McQueen or John Galliano.”

Here are some of the Facebook members comments: ”UK cover - Colourful and sassy,” “US cover - done to death! More originality please Anna!”, “Russian cover - Worst Dec cover.”,”German cover - She doesn’t look very happy for someone who has just received a substantial necklace for Christmas…buck up”.

We’re excited that Judge a Cover has inspired you to comment. We want more! Do the poll!

What do you think?

Man up – Tell us what kind of man you are!

One of our valued readers requested we comment on Male Fragrances.  So here it is!

This fashion savvy heterosexual male (“not that there is anything wrong with it”) had difficulties relating to the models and celebrities in fragrance print ads. He found that images of Matthew McConaughey / The One with his shirt off and the naked picture of Marc Jacobs/ Bang where neither  aspirational or relatable.

Which made me question – How many men actually buy their own fragrances and how many male fragrances are marketed to women and gay men?

What adverts do you relate to and when was your last fragrance purchase? Who was it for?

Over the next few days I am going to post videos from top selling mens fragrances and later in the week comment on some of the print campaigns.

We look forward to your opinions!
